One of the most common causes of refrigerant gas leaks in commercial refrigeration systems is evaporator coil corrosion. This issue, often referred to as formicary corrosion, occurs when oxygen, moisture, and organic compounds interact with the copper tubing inside the evaporator coil.
Why Does Evaporator Coil Corrosion Happen?
As refrigerated air circulates through your fridge or coolroom, it flows over the copper tubes of the evaporator coil where heat transfer takes place. Unfortunately, this airflow also carries moisture and organic compounds, which settle on the copper surface. Over time, a chemical reaction begins, attacking the copper and eventually making the tube wall porous—leading to refrigerant leaks.
For this reaction to occur, three elements must be present simultaneously:
- Oxygen
- Moisture
- Organic acids
Where Do Organic Acids Come From?
Here’s a fun fact: all foodstuffs are acidic to some degree. Common acids found in food include:
- Acetic Acid – fruits, berries, vinegar
- Citric Acid – citrus fruits
- Fatty Acids – fats and oils
- Lactic Acid – sour milk products, sourdough bread
When uncovered food is stored in a refrigerated space, airflow accelerates oxidation and releases organic acids into the airstream—creating the perfect environment for coil corrosion.
