The Team at MNK recently solved an interesting issue brought to us by a new client with a large commercial kitchen that specialises in high volume production of meals. Meals are produced then blast chilled and in some cases snap frozen for later use. The kitchen runs a large frozen storage room that is approximately 3 years old installed by other contractors.

Our client advised that in the 3 year lifespan of their large freezer room, they have carried out replacement of the compressor twice over, this is a highly irregular situation. Unfortunately, this situation was brought to light during a subsequent breakdown of the freezer room, where we were called in for a second opinion of a broken down freezer room full of product that will soon thaw out.

Upon investigation of the condensing unit that had been installed to this freezer, we found that the packaged unit that had been supplied must have been selected on price alone and that the compressor was operating at the extreme end of its performance envelope to achieve the task of running a freezer, hence the continual equipment failures being experienced by our new client.

For us the clock was ticking whilst we explored options available, we needed to provide a solution that worked, made economic sense, and do it quickly. In a perfect scenario we would love to have replaced the entire packaged unit with equipment more suited to the task of low temperature work, unfortunately with thousands of $$$ worth of frozen stock waiting on us, that solution would not be practical to achieve in the limited time frame and would cost the client a fortune. We instead looked into the option of retrofitting a new high quality compressor to the existing packaged unit, the retrofit would require some modifications but seemed achievable and would allow us to select a compressor more suited to low temperature work.

We were able to track down an appropriate compressor for our task, however some of the components we required were at various locations throughout our suppliers network. Not be deterred we coordinated a courier, a taxi cab, and other MNK team members to hit the road and urgently collect the mechanical parts from various locations across the city that we required to get the freezer operating. After a marathon effort by our team we were able to rebuild the existing condensing unit and get it operating before our clients product thawed out.
